Yellow Ostrich North American Tour with Say Hi and Blair

If there is one thing we hear most online, it’s people asking us to play in their city. Well, we’re really psyched to announce that in March, we’ll be coming to a lot of cities in the United States and Canada. The (great) band Say Hi has invited us to open for them on their upcoming tour. Starting March 3rd we will be joining them and Blair on the road for a string of 22 dates, plus SXSW shows.

After the 3/31 Seattle show, we are going to tour back to New York rather quickly but we hope to have some shows on the way back. We will announce those dates when we know what they are.

If we’re not playing a show near you, don’t worry. We will be on the road a lot more in the coming months.

We will have LPs for The Mistress, cassettes for Fade Cave, and hopefully t-shirts and posters for sale on this trip.

We’re really excited to meet all of you who have been tweeting at us, writing on our facebook wall, or e-mailing us over the course of these past months. Make sure you come out and say hi (no pun intended) to us!

Residency at Pianos in February!

Some coolness is afoot in Yellow Ostrich land for February.

Famous/awesome Lower East Side venue Pianos has invited us to play a residency. We will be performing every Thursday night in February. What’s more, for each of the first three nights of the residency, we invited a different blog who we admire and respect to curate the show. The final night of the residency will be curated by Yellow Ostrich.

In addition, we will play different material each night of the residency. One night we will play The Mistress in its entirety. Another we will play songs from Fade Cave and other “rarities.” Another night we will premiere some brand new songs. The final night we will play our “best of”.

Here is the current line up for the show:

2/3/2011 - I Guess I’m Floating curated - with Telenovas and La Big Vic - Yellow Ostrich will play The Mistress in its entirety. Tickets!

2/10/2011 - A Heart is A Spade curated - with Holidayholiday, Mussels, and Mammal of Paradise - Yellow Ostrich will focus on Fade Cave-ish songs (not sure yet) and rarities. Tickets!

2/17/2011 - Muzzle of Bees curated - with Strand of Oaks and Conrad Plymouth - Yellow Ostrich will focus on new material. Tickets!

2/24/2011 - Yellow Ostrich curated - with Empress Hotel, Holy Spirits, and a secret headliner. Tickets!

We’re also going to have vinyl copies of The Mistress and cassette tape copies of Fade Cave for sale at these shows.

We have a lot of great stuff planned for these shows. We hope to see you there!

We are super psyched to announce that Trey Many at Billions is now our booking agent. Billions’ (and especially Trey’s) roster reads like the best ever playlist on our ipod. We couldn’t be more excited.

Odds and Ends: KEXP, Their Bated Breath

Just wanted to pass along a couple random things that slipped under the radar this incredibly hectic past couple of days.

First, KEXP was uber quick in uploading our live in-studio set. You can find it here: Yellow Ostrich on KEXP . Be sure to check out Daughter, which is a new song.

Also, the KEXP volunteer Beth Eisgrau-Heller was kind enough to photograph out set. The photo set is here. You can flip through those pictures while listening to the set and it’s basicallyly like watching a really slow, really choppy video of the live show….almost as good as the real thing! ……or not. We’ll get on the road and come to your town in 2011. I promise.

Second, I don’t usually pass along press on this blog but I couldn’t pass this up. Their Bated Breath named The Mistress as their #2 album of 2010!! Pretty insane. Check it out: Their Bated Breath’s Best Albums of 2010

Afternoon Records to release The Mistress on vinyl

First off, in just a few hours from now, be sure to tune into KEXP (you can listen on the internet at kexp.org) at 12 noon (eastern time, 11 am central time, and so on) TODAY (Tuesday). We will be playing a live session in the studio with John Richards on his morning show.

In case you miss it because of a pesky “job” where you are required to be productive at noon EST, fear not, the performance will be archived on KEXP.org forever so that you can listen to it then. I think they may be videotaping part of it as well, so there’s that.

Secondly, we have more good news to report today: Afternoon Records is releasing The Mistress on vinyl!! They are a label out of Minneapolis, home to bands like Pomegranates, John Vanderslice, and Haley Bonar. We are very grateful for their assistance in getting The Mistress out on vinyl.

The limited edition YELLOW vinyl will be released on 2/15/11. I got the album remastered this week (as in mastered by someone who actually knew what they were doing) so it sounds even better.

A cool thing about Afternoon Records is that they do distribution through Warner Music Group, the giant major company. So that means that The Mistress will be in many major record stores across the U.S.A.

Yellow Ostrich live in-studio KEXP set on Nov. 30th!

Exciting news! KEXP has invited us to play a live in studio set on Tuesday, November 30th (two weeks from today). We’ll be on air at noon eastern time, 9am on the west coast, and you can listen in via KEXP’s website.

Needless to say we’re incedibly excited about this as KEXP is ten steps beyond amazing and because this will give those of you outside the New York area a chance to finally hear some of the live show.

Just a heads up, we’re playing Pianos (158 Ludlow St in the Lower East Side) tonight at 11pm and not 10, as previously stated. The later set time is because the awesome Strand of Oaks is now playing before us. Even more reason to come out! The cost is $8.

New Shows Announced

New Shows Announced!

I just put up two new shows on the “Show” page—-

First is THIS 10pm THURSDAY, 11/11, at Pianos in the lower east side. It would be great if you could make this one, we might [spoiler alert/hint hint] being doing something really big and cool at this venue early next year so we’d like to make a good impression on the Piano Man (who I assume runs Pianos). Still not sure of the rest of the bill, will post as soon as we have it. Here is the link for tickets and set times.

Second, awesomely titled Modern Mystery Blog (Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin reference ftw!) is having their first annual Holiday Show at Bowery Electric on December 13th, which we’ve been invited to play. I’m not sure if Santa Claus or Kwanzaa Bot will be there, but if they are, we’ll try to get them to sit in on tambourine or something. Should be worthwhile for that alone.

Early Birthing Stages

Here’s another EBS (see what i did there?). this one’s a bit different because it’s a live recording; it’s from the first show I ever played as Yellow Ostrich, back in February of this year, when I opened for Bishop Allen (and where i met Michael, future YO drummer!). This is “Mary,” a couple of weeks after I had written the song. the quality kind of sucks, but i think its listenable.

Early Birthing Stages

When i was making The Mistress, i went through a lot of ‘rough drafts’ where I would record things quickly just to get the idea down. I like to call these the “early birthing stages” of the song. Usually it was into my phone, sometimes I did more of a fleshed out thing.

Here is an early version of “Hahahaohhoho”, mostly acoustic guitar and singing. it’s kind of ridiculous compared to the final version. so be warned.

also, i realize this may interest <1 people but damn it this is my website and I’ll do what I want with it!
